Randy Hanvelt

Public Lands Steering Committee Chair
Supervisor, Tuolumne County, Calif.

Number of years involved in NACo: 5

Years in public service: 8

Occupation: Retired global executive (General Electric Co.)

Education: Engineering degree from Harvey Mudd College; nuclear engineering degree from UC Berkeley

The hardest thing I’ve ever done is: Basic research in nuclear thermionics.

Three people (living or dead) I’d invite to dinner are: Jesus Christ, Leonardo DaVinci and Gloria Hanvelt (my wife of 53 years).

A dream I have is to: Have a rational scientific and systems-based approach to public lands management.

The most adventurous thing I’ve ever done was: Race Hawaiian outrigger canoes across the Catalina Channel three times.

My favorite way to relax is: Gardening.

You’d be surprised to learn that I: Have conducted a symphony orchestra.

I’m most proud of: The most wonderful woman I somehow convinced to marry me.

Every morning I read: My daily devotion.

My favorite meal is: The last one I had with my wife, Gloria.

My pet peeve is: Ignorance.

My motto is: Only two things happen in life: results and excuses. No one likes excuses, so we do not offer any and we do not take any either.

My favorite movie is: Patton.

My favorite music is: Classical.

My favorite U.S. president is: Ronald Reagan.

My county is a NACo member because: We have been members of NACo forever, but never really participated. About six years ago, I gave the assignment to one of our new supervisors to find out what NACo was all about. We now participate in as much as we can: Legislative Conference, WIR, Annual Conference, PILT Fly-In, several committees and monthly phone calls. NACo is a really good partnership for us.
