NACo Counties Futures Lab

The NACo Counties Futures Lab brings together leading national experts to examine and forecast the trends, innovations and promises of county government with an eye toward positioning America's county leaders for success. Focusing primarily on pressing county governance and management issues — and grounded in analytics, data and knowledge sharing — the Lab delivers research studies, reports and other actionable intelligence to a variety of venues in collaboration with corporate, academic and philanthropic thought leaders to promote the county government of the future.

Coal-Reliant Communities Innovation Challenge

The National Association of Counties and the National Association of Development Organizations (NADO) Research Foundation, with the support of the U.S. Economic Development Administration, are partnering to support county and regional leaders in coal-reliant communities with retooling their economies to become more resilient to changing conditions.

County Health Learning Challenge

Through the generous support of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and our partnership with the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute, three counties have been selected to address a chosen health improvement focus area over the next year. Multi-sector teams from each of these counties will work together, with their peer county teams and with a Community Coach from the County Health Rankings & Roadmaps program to make progress on building a Culture of Health in their communities.

County Health Rankings

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin's Population Health Institute released the sixth annual County Health Rankings on March 25, 2015. The County Health Rankings show us where we live matters to our health and provides counties with an annual check-up of their health.

County Prosperity Summits

In Spring 2015, NACo worked with counties across the country to host County Prosperity Summits to generate creative solutions around local economic opportunities.

e-Connect Direct

NACo has partnered with Multi-Bank Securities, Inc. (MBS) endorsing eConnectDirect® as an essential tool for members to manage their fixed-income investment needs. This proprietary tool gives county treasurers visibility to thousands of fixed-income offerings in a market with little transparency.

Healthiest Cities & Counties Challenge

The National Association of Counties is a partner on the Healthiest Cities & Counties Challenge (the Challenge). Counties and cities involved in the Challenge will work to improve their residents’ health by incorporating health considerations into policies and practices, developing replicable strategies that achieve measurable results and creating sustainability by leveraging prize money from the Challenge.

Healthy Counties Initiative

NACo’s Healthy Counties Initiative aims to enhance public/private partnerships in local health delivery, improve individual and community health, and assist counties to effectively implement federal health reform. The initiative engages county officials and private sector partners across the country.

Public Finance Authority

The Public Finance Authority (PFA) is a unique governmental entity created to issue tax-exempt conduit bonds for public and private entities in all 50 states as well as on a multi-state basis.

Resilient Counties Initiative

In order to remain healthy, vibrant, safe and economically competitive, America’s counties must be able to anticipate and adapt to all types of change. Through the Resilient Counties initiative, NACo works with counties and their stakeholders to bolster their ability to thrive amid changing physical, environmental, social and economic conditions.

Smart Justice

Smart Justice efforts aim to build knowledge and capacity for successful justice policies and practices among the nation’s counties. Smart Justice projects enhance partnerships among public, private and philanthropic leaders along with national experts to promote safer communities and utilize taxpayer money more effectively and efficiently.

The Stepping Up Initiative

In May 2015, NACo and partners at the CSG Justice Center and APF launched Stepping Up: A National Initiative to Reduce the Number of People with Mental Illnesses in Jails and announced a Call to Action demonstrating strong county and state leadership and a shared commitment to a multi-step planning process that can achieve concrete results for jails in counties of all sizes.

Transportation & Infrastructure Initiative

The decisions that county leaders make every day about transportation and infrastructure policies and investments influence local and national economic opportunities, shape how communities grow and change and contribute to Americans’ quality of life. Through the Transportation and Infrastructure Initiative, NACo is strengthening the capacity of county leaders to deliver transportation and infrastructure services to their communities.
