Stafford County, Virginia, with a population of 139,992 is located in the I-95 corridor, midway between Richmond and Washington, D.C., invites résumés and applications for the position of Public Works Director. The Director’s position provides committed professionals with appropriate skill sets the opportunity to manage in a fast-paced, high quality, service-oriented environment overseeing a wide range of diverse programs that impact the County’s environment, transportation and permitting systems. The Department of Public Works is responsible for and is committed to maintaining the County’s physical infrastructure and providing quality services to the citizens of Stafford County. The Department operates with six (6) division programs which cover a wide variety of areas of operation including: the Building, Community Development Services Center, Environmental, Public Construction, Securities and Transportation Divisions. The adopted budget for the Department for FY 2018 is $4.85 million and the Department operates with 44 full-time employees.
Successful candidates must possess a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, urban planning, architecture or related fields and a significant experience in code enforcement and administration, public administration, building and development trades and environmental programs is required. Certification as a Professional Engineer in accordance with Virginia standards is a plus. Past experience in successfully managing a diverse range of operational functions similar to those contained within Stafford County’s current department is a strong consideration. Direct technical experience in the areas above is also an important factor. Qualified candidates must have dynamic leadership skills and a passion for development and maintenance of high quality customer service oriented programs, while possessing the ability to convey a clear vision and direction that builds on the current quality of Department staff. The salary for the position is negotiable up to the mid $120,000’s, based on the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience.
