Tackling the Opioid Epidemic: Panel Discussion

The opioid epidemic has recently been named a public health emergency by President Trump. Deaths from opioid overdoses, including prescription drugs, fentanyl, and heroin, have escalated over 15X in the past five years in some states.

The opioid epidemic is the deadliest in recent history, even surpassing the HIV/AIDs epidemic at its height. In 2015, drug-overdose deaths exceeded deaths from car crashes, gun suicides, and homicides.

The opioid epidemic has not improved in any state in the U.S. since the 1990s. However, the death rate from opioids has stabilized in a few states such as California and Texas. Meanwhile, states in the Rust Belt have been hardest hit. Ohio had the greatest increase in opioid-overdose deaths from 2010 to 2015.

Health professionals all over the country are working day and night on the front lines of the crisis, attempting to disrupt the spread of addiction in their communities. LiveStories CEO Adnan Mahmud discussed programs to address the crisis with public health experts from Summit County, Ohio, and Los Angeles County, California.

This panel features Cory Kendrick, Jackie Pollard and Dr. Tina Kim.
