About Hon. George Dunlap
George Dunlap was elected NACo Second Vice President on July 15, 2024, and is currently serving his 16th year on the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners, where he has served as chairman for the last 6 terms. A retired law enforcement officer (27yrs), in the military (13yrs), and former Charlotte-Mecklenburg School Board member (13yrs), George is a lifelong public servant. He has served in various roles on the local and national level in service to his community. He formerly served as chairman of the County’s Effective and Efficient Government Committee, a member of the Public Safety Committee, a member of the Economic Development Committee, and as the liaison to the Mecklenburg County Fire Commission.
George was previously appointed by the NC Governor to serve on the NC Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission. He is a member of the Board of Directors for the NC Association of County Commissioners, NC Sheriffs Education and Training Standards Commission, Smart Start Board of Directors, and a Fellow on the Broad Institute of Governance. George received his master’s degree in public administration and his Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from UNC Charlotte.
