About Erik Janas

Erik Janas serves as Deputy County Administrator for the Franklin County Board of Commissioners, with a particular focus on developing external partnerships to promote the Board’s policy agenda. Franklin County is the 33rd largest county in the United States and largest in Ohio, with a population of more than 1.2 million. The Franklin County Board of Commissioners manages a general fund budget of nearly $450 million and an all-funds budget of approximately $1.5 billion.

 

In his role as deputy administrator, Erik works with Franklin County’s four levy agencies – Developmental Disabilities, Alcohol, Drug Addiction & Mental Health, Children’s Services and the Franklin County Office on Aging – by interacting with the boards and executive staffs on fiscal, policy and advocacy matters. Erik also directly supervises the departments of Economic Development and Planning, Sanitary Engineering and Animal Care and Control, and has previously supervised Public Affairs and Job and Family Services.

 

In addition, Erik is the liaison to the 67 boards, commissions, committees and authorities to which the Franklin County Commissioners appoint, including such key Central Ohio organizations as the Franklin County Convention Facilities Authority and the Columbus Regional Airport Authority. Erik directly represents the Board of Commissioners on the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission, the Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio, the Workforce Development Board of Central Ohio, Experience Columbus (the regional convention and visitor bureau) and the Franklin County Emergency Management & Homeland Security Agency. Erik regularly works on behalf of the county with business organizations such as the Columbus Chamber of Commerce, Tech Columbus and the Columbus Partnership, and served on the transition committee for Columbus 2020, the public/private economic development entity in Central Ohio.

 

Erik directs government affairs activities for the Board of Commissioners at the federal, state, regional and municipal level, with a primary focus on leveraging relationships, implementing policy changes and maximizing resources for Franklin County initiatives. Erik also represents the Board of Commissioners on Celebrate One, the community’s collaborative to improve infant mortality, and executive committee of the Prevent Family Homelessness Collaborative.

 

Mr. Janas has served in local government nearly 20 years. Prior to joining Franklin County, Mr. Janas was the Regional & Government Affairs Advisor for the Mayor of the City of Columbus. Mr. Janas has also served in multiple human service agencies for Cuyahoga County, Ohio, and in the Departments of Development, Finance and the Mayor’s office for the City of Cleveland.

 

Mr. Janas has a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Dayton and a master’s degree in Public Administration from the Levin College of Urban Affairs at Cleveland State University. Born and raised in Northeast Ohio, Mr. Janas is a current resident of Columbus.
