Development Activity Page

New Hanover County, N.C.

Using existing technology, New Hanover County Planning and Land Use staff created an interactive development activity webpage that allows the general public, key stakeholders, elected officials, visitors, and other staff to have convenient and easy access to information about projects under development in the county. The page includes a development activity map that utilizes online mapping tools to identify and select properties and retrieve key attributes and information about each project. Users can create buffers and download certain information about properties to spreadsheets. It includes application materials and site plans for development, community meeting dates and outcomes, and an archive of developments in the county. This webpage was developed because county staff listened and acted on citizens’ requests for information on major development proposals earlier in the process. The webpage was created in-house and launched in November 2016, providing thorough and easy-to-access information. It has already become one of the most popular pages on the Planning website, with users commenting on its usefulness.

About 100 Brilliant Ideas at Work

Counties play an essential role in keeping America’s communities healthy, vibrant and safe. With public and private sector partners, we pursue innovative approaches to advance public health and well-being, protect public safety and foster economic strength and resiliency. Counties anticipate and adapt to challenges by thinking outside the box and demonstrating local leadership that makes a difference in people’s lives.

Under the leadership of NACo Immediate Past President Bryan Desloge, NACo embarked on an initiative to identify and share 100 examples of visionary county leadership that results in improving residents’ quality of life. Through this initiative, NACo worked with county leaders and partners to share best practices that bolster our nation’s ability to thrive county by county.
