Collier County, Fla.
Collier County’s Growth Management Department is charged with ensuring that construction activities meet Florida Building Code and local land development code requirements. Following the approval of a building permit or site development plan, county inspectors are required to verify that construction activities conform to approved plans. In 2013, the Growth Management Department, with the coordination and support of the local development industry, implemented a new inspections service to enhance the customer experience. The program created an inspection service that provides real time data in an accessible manner. The service also improved governmental accountability and employee productivity. The county’s inspection service provides four deliverables to the local development community. First, every morning at 8:30 a.m. the list of inspections, by inspector, is posted on a website accessible to the public. Second, inspection results are provided real time, allowing project managers to see if an inspection passed or if corrections are needed. Third, the service accepts time specific inspection requests due to the nature of the work. Fourth, the program tracks completed inspection results by project. The program also provides measurable benefits to the Growth Management Department such as more time in the field conducting inspections due to less time spent developing daily inspection routes. The service has been successful in creating an accessible and efficient inspection process. Based on industry feedback, the service has become integral and integrated into their planning model.
