Chris Rodgers, NACo’s Immediate Past President and Douglas
County, Neb. Commissioner, was in Washington this week to participate in a
meeting of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Freight Advisory
Committee (NFAC). The NFAC was established to engage stakeholders and solicit
advice and recommendations on matters related to freight transportation,
including the implementation of the freight transportation requirements
included in the Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act
(MAP-21). After a lengthy nomination process that began in February 2013,
Commissioner Rodgers was appointed to the NFAC in June and selected to serve on
the First and Last Mile Subcommittee.
This week’s meeting was the second meeting of the NFAC since
its formation. Members participated in three days of discussions and briefings
on freight transportation policies, which included an opportunity for members
to present their ideas to Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx on how the U.S.
Department of Transportation can improve the national freight transportation
