Administration Announces Infrastructure Streamlining Process

On May 17, President Obama issued a memorandum aimed at improving the federal review and approval process of state and local infrastructure projects. The chief objective outlined in the memorandum is to reduce the permitting time for infrastructure projects by half. The memorandum builds on Executive Order No. 13604, which also addressed improvements to the federal review and approval process and was signed by the President in March 2012. This memorandum will require federal agencies to modernize key regulations, policies, and procedures, including the following:

  • Institutionalization or expansion of best processes to streamline the delivery of reviews
  • Revision of key review and permitting regulations and procedure
  • Utilization of concurrent and integrated project reviews
  • Expansion coordination with state, local and tribal governments
  • Expansion of the use of information technology tools

The presidential memorandum is available here.
