CONFERENCES

The Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) is holding the Meeting Financial Challenges, GFOA’s 97th Annual Conference May 18–21 in New York City. The conference will offer an opportunity for government finance professionals to receive information on the latest tools and techniques to meet today’s financial challenges. More than 75 concurrent sessions and discussion groups will offer practical strategies and tactics for dealing with the fiscal issues confronting state and local governments. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Chicago Botanic Garden, and Conservation Technology Information Center, in cooperation with the Center for Watershed Protection and Tetra Tech, Inc., will hold a national conference, Urban Storm Water:Enhancing Programs at the Local Level Feb. 17–20, 2003 at The Westin Michigan Avenue in Chicago. At this national conference, attendees will learn about state-of-the-art storm water technologies and implementation programs that have proven success in local communities. Staff and engineers representing local governments will find the Conference particularly useful, as will water resource managers, conservation groups, local officials, researchers, educators, and state agency personnel.

PUBLICATIONS

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency published the Onsite Wastewater Treatment Systems Manual. The manual is available at no charge on the Internet. The manual provides state, county, and municipal septic system regulatory agencies up-to-date information on onsite treatment system siting, design, installation, maintenance, replacement and management. National experts from the public, private, and academic sectors provided input for development of the new manual over the past three years.

Mathematica Policy Research, Inc. released a new issue brief, Welfare Clients’ Employment Obstacles in Rural and Urban Areas: Lessons from Nebraska, based on Mathematica’s evaluation of Nebraska’s welfare program, Employment First. The brief examines welfare clients in rural and urban areas of Nebraska, detailing their employment experiences and obstacles. The brief highlights important differences, points to reasons behind the differences and suggest program priorities for rural and urban settings.
