NACo President Ken Mayfield, President-elect Karen Miller, First Vice-President Angelo Kyle, Second Vice-President Bill Hansell and Executive Director Larry Naake attended the Premier Members Executive Retreat in Monterey County (Carmel), Calif. Oct. 20-23.
Mayfield and Naake attended the State Association Executive Directors Annual Meeting in Lawrence County (Deadwood), S.D. Oct. 16-19.
On Oct. 14 in Cook County (Chicago), Miller met with Terry McDermott, CEO of the REALTORS, to discuss the Innovations in Smart Growth initiative.
Mayfield led the discussion at a leadership summit focusing on area housing issues in Washington, D.C. The summit took place Oct. 9 at the headquarters of the National Association of Homebuilders (NAHB). The concept of the summit arose out of the partnership agreement between NACo and NAHB, signed in 2001 during the Large Urban County Caucus Housing & Sustainable Communities Presidential Summit. Miller, Kyle, Hansell and Naake also attended.
Bob Fogel, associate legislative director, spoke about TEA-21 reauthorization to the American Public Transit Association on Oct. 11 in Washington, D.C., and about the future of the Federal Highway Program to the Road Gang, a group of highway lobbyists, Oct. 17, also in Washington, D.C.
Dalen Harris, legislative associate, participated in several panels on homeland security during the International Association of Emergency Managers (IAEM) 50th Annual Conference and Exhibit in Franklin County (Columbus), Ohio Oct. 12-16.
Joe Dunn, associate legislative director, and Jason Shedlock, community services associate, attended the 35th Annual Training Conference of the National Association of Development Organizations (NADO) in Washoe County (Reno), Nev. Sept. 28-Oct. 1. Dunn was on a panel called Grassroots Organizing: Learn How to Hit the Ground Running, and Shedlock attended sessions on maintaining critical infrastructure. They also met with Nevada Association of Counties (NACO) Executive Director Bob Hadfield and Program Coordinator Tracy Becker at the NACO offices in Carson City, Nev.
Kaye Braaten, county services representative, will be in Knox County (Knoxville) representing NACo at the Tennessee County Services Association Annual Fall Conference Oct. 30-Nov. 1.
