The International Association of Emergency Managers (IAEM) held its 50th Annual Conference in Columbus, Ohio. Built on the theme, Defending the Homeland: Comprehensive Emergency Management, the IAEM conference held concurrent sessions on partnership, advanced EMA issues, technology, weather, and student presentations. There were panel discussions on public health, fire service and emergency management, homeland defense from the metro perspective, and public-private partnerships. The opening general session featured Gregory Smith, American Red Cross; Dale Shipley, National Emergency Management Association (NEMA); Ed Buikema, FEMA Region 5, and NACo representative Dalen Harris who spoke on the achievements of NACos post September 11, 45-member task force on homeland security.
The National Association of County Aging Programs (NACAP) will hold a special session on the latest research on Alzheimers at NACos Workforce and Human Services Conference in San Francisco. The session is scheduled for Nov. 14 from 9 a.m.10 a.m. The featured speaker will be Dr. Diana Koin, educational director for Elder and Dependent Adult Abuse at the University of California, Davis Medical Center.

The National Association of County Human Services Administrators is a co-sponsor of the National Conference on Child Abuse and Neglect being held March 31April 5, 2003 in St. Louis, Mo.
In late June, Scott Cameron, chair of the Geospatial One Stop Project, sent an invitation to the geospatial community to participate in the development of data content standards and models for the National Spatial Data Infrastructure. An important objective of that call for participation was to broaden the role of the non-federal community in the standards development process to help ensure that the final standards and models address state, local and tribal needs.
Representing the National Association of County Surveyors (NACS) on this project are Past President Chuck Pearson, as a member of the advisory team for the cadastral layer, and President-Elect Gail Oliver, as an advisor on the geodetic control team.
