NACo Officers & County Officials
President Javier Gonzales met with President George W. Bush April 8 in Knoxville, Tenn. during an informal roundtable discussion between Bush and 13 local officials from throughout the country. Gonzalez and a sheriff were the only county representatives at the meeting (see story). Gonzalez met with Bush and the other officials for about 45 minutes.
On April 11, Gonzalez addressed the general session of the Utah Association of Counties Management Conference in Park City.
NACo Staff
On April 4, NACo Executive Director Larry Naake, Deputy Executive Director Ed Ferguson, and Director of Conferences Kim Struble were in New Orleans to conduct advance planning for the 2002 NACo Annual Conference and Exposition. While there, Naake addressed the New Orleans City Council, expressing his appreciation for the tremendous support and hard work Orleans Parish, and parishes from across the state of Louisiana, are expending on behalf of NACos 2002 Annual Conference and Exposition, which will take place July 1216 in New Orleans.
NACo Extension Fellow Paul Sunderland, a passionate advocate of educating urban youth about the role of agriculture in their lives, has been named Ag Star Individual for 2002. The annual award will be presented during the Oregon Ag Fest at the Oregon State Fairgrounds in Salem, April 2728. Sunderland has been instrumental in helping to provide the transportation of several thousand inner-city school kids to Ag Fest.
Bob Fogel, associate legislative director, attended the National Association of County Engineers Annual Conference in San Diego March 24-26. He addressed the Opening General Session and briefed the Board of Directors on NACo transportation policy and on the reauthorization of TEA-21.
