Senate moves to rescind $207 million in WIA funds

By Neil E. Bomberg
associate legislative director

The full Senate is expected to vote on a measure next week that would eliminate more than $200 million from the Workforce Investment Act’s dislocated worker program. The Senate Appropriations Committee, led by Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), voted, June 21 to cut funds from the program. The rescission, if adopted by the House and Senate, would reduce funds for Program Year 2001. Those funds became available July 1. The move comes on the heels of a failed effort by the House of Representatives to rescind $359 million from the dislocated worker and adult programs.
