Make wetlands do the work

By Abigail Friedman
senior project manager

Believe or not, wetlands can work for you. Guiding Principles for Constructed Treatment Wetlands: Providing Water Quality and Wildlife Habitat, a recent publication by EPA, tells you how.

Generally, constructed wetlands are engineered to use natural processes to assist treatment of an effluent or other source of water. In some cases there may be opportunities to restore degraded or former wetlands. Many counties and local governments have used constructed wetlands to assist stormwater management, flood control and non-point source pollution prevention.

The document includes guiding principles for siting, design, construction, operation, maintenance and monitoring of constructed treatment wetlands; information on current agency policies, permits, regulations, and resources; and answers to common questions .
