House vote launches
debate on budget priorities

Congress has begun the debate over the FY2002 Budget Resolution. The House passed a GOP leadership-backed resolution, which is very similar to President Bush’s budget blueprint, on a tight vote of 222-205.

The resolution caps FY2002 discretionary spending (as opposed to mandatory spending such as Social Security) at $660.6 billion, which is about four percent more than this year’s level.
