New water kit on tap from NACo

By James Davenport
Research Associate

NACo will soon release the Source Water Information Kit to county governments across the country. The kit will include brochures, technical documents, case studies and other information about the tools, techniques and strategies available for protecting local drinking water supplies.

Among the featured items are a number of programs to increase public, private and community involvement in the planning and development of effective local drinking water protection programs.

The kit includes materials and publications developed by organizations with various levels of expertise in the drinking water protection process such as

  • EPA/Office of Groundwater and Drinking Water
  • Conference of Southern County Association (CSCA)
  • International City/County Management Association
  • National Center for Small Communities (NCSC)
  • Home*A*Syst/Farm*A*Syst
  • Groundwater Foundation, and the
  • National Rural Water Association

Hot off the press are three new publications that will also be in the kit. However, you can get a head start by ordering these publications, listed below, today.

Source Water Protection – A Guidebook for Local Governments

This guidebook and accompanying executive summary provide local officials with important information such as

  • checklist of tools for source water protection
  • summary of funding programs and
  • local tools for specific threats.

NACo and CSCA produced the document in May 2000.

Protecting Drinking Water – County Partnerships That Work

This document profiles four county officials working with key stakeholders to provide some measure of protection to their drinking water. Each profile includes a discussion of the tools and strategies that were used, as well as the outcomes and lessons leaned from these efforts. These profiles can serve as peer-to-peer examples to other counties that are just getting started in the source water assessment and protection process. The NACo Source Water Protection Project published this document in June 2000.

From Assessment to Action: Protecting Small Town and Rural County Public Water Sources

This report will assist small town and rural county decision-makers to understand the potential threats to their drinking water and to use new resources and funding to protect them. This document is the fourth in a series of Source Water Action Guides for rural communities produced by NACo and NCSC in September 2000.

For more information on the Source Water Information Kits, please contact James Davenport of the NACo Source Water Protection Project at 202/661-8807 or email: jdavenpo@naco.org.

If you wish to order complete kits, they will be available by December 2000. If you would like the three documents before that time, NACo will send them to you and, if you wish, will send the kit later without the materials previously ordered.
