Appropriators eye deep cuts
Senate appropriators for the Departments of Labor, Health and Human Services and Education, propose slashing the Social Services Block Grant, Title XX, from $1.6 billion to $600 million, while their House counterparts aim to cut Workforce Investment Act programs by 10 percent.
The unusually early appropriations process is intended to give DOL, HHS and Education programs a better chance at higher funding. However, the president has already threatened to veto both bills, and sources say the Title XX and WIA cuts are part of the reason.
