Local government, retailers
rally for e-fairness on Hill

A coalition of local government officials and national retailers stormed Capitol Hill April 7, calling for Congress to ignore an unofficial report by the Advisory Commission on Electronic Commerce that calls for preempting local government and granting tax breaks to e-retailers.

The commission was charged with making recommendations to Congress on e-commerce and tax policy. County officials are worried that sales taxes, currently uncollected on purchases made over the Internet, will eat away at a tax base (sales taxes equal 36 percent of state and local revenues or $237 billion) used to pay for public services.
