NACo/NACRC Commission
set to meet Jan. 10, 2001 in D.C.


The National Commission on Election Standards and Reform, sponsored by NACo and the National Association of County Recorders, Election Officials and Clerks (NACRC), will hold its first meeting, Jan. 10, 2001 in Washington, D.C.

NACo President Jane Hague, King County, Wash. council member, and NACRC President Ernie Hawkins, Sacramento County, Calif. registrar of voting, are co-chairs.

Commission members will be tapped from the ranks of county governing boards, county and state election officials, national civic associations and election process experts.

Appointments to date include: Commissioner Becky Carney, Mecklenburg County, N.C.; Commissioner Julian Bolton, Shelby County, Tenn.; County Recorder Helen Purcell, Maricopa County, Ariz.; Commissioner John Dowlin, Hamilton County, Ohio; Commissioner Sam Jones, Mobile County, Ala.; and Commissioner Barbara Sheen Todd, Pinellas County, Fla.

Also: Cathy Pearsall-Stipek, Pierce County, Wash. auditor; Pat Kelly, El Paso County, Colo. clerk, recorder; David Orr, Cook County, Ill. clerk; Linda Lunceford, Weber County, Utah clerk/auditor; and Wendy Noren, Boone County, Mo. clerk.

The commission is part of a four-pronged effort by NACo and NACRC to bolster voter confidence in the nation’s election system.
