  • NACo President Jane Hague put a positive spin on the current election brouhaha in a USA Today piece entitled “Proposals Circulate on Election Reform” by Tom Squitierti. “One good thing that has come out of this year’s election is that people have started talking about the role of the counties in the electoral process,” Hague said in the story dated Nov. 21.

  • Fairfax County (Va.) Supervisor and NACo Board Member Gerry Hyland delivered the keynote address on the quality of Virginia’s waterways at the Local Government Forum, the 7th Annual Virginia Watershed Management Conference, Williamsburg, Va., Nov. 30. Abigail Friedman, NACo project manager, was a panelist.

  • Larry Naake, NACo executive director, hosted an all-staff briefing Nov. 29 that included a presentation by Cam Marston of Marston Communications called “Managing Four Generations in the Workplace.”

  • Ed Ferguson, director of the County Services Department; Jane Forsythe, director, conferences and meetings; and Lois Kampinsky, Telecommunications and Education director; all attended the 2001 Annual Conference Advisory Committee meeting, Dec. 2-3 in Philadelphia. NACo’s Members Programs and Services Committee suggested creation of this committee to foster educational content at upcoming annual conferences. Kampinsky also oversaw the “Grow Your Nest Egg” retirement education program Dec. 6, in Rochester, Minn. during the last day of the Association of Minnesota Counties’ legislative conference. Upcoming seminars are to be readied for North Dakota, Arizona, Alabama, and Virginia.

  • Robert Dean Halman, an extension fellow at NACo from 1996-1997, where he staffed the Agricultural and Rural Affairs and Rural Renaissance committees, will be the new assistant secretary of the Maryland State Department of Agriculture. Halman was extension director and extension educator in Harford County since 1990. He also served as liaison to the USDA.

  • Sandy Markwood, deputy director, County Services Department, represented NACo at the Galveston (Texas) County Health Leadership Campaign workshop, Nov. 28-29. The Galveston workshop served as a pilot for counties interested in starting their own community-based health care programs for the uninsured. NACo and the U.S. Bureau of Primary Health Care are partners on the 100 Percent Access and Zero Disparities Health Care Campaign.

  • Gary Gortenburg, project director, Workforce Development, discussed election 2000 at the Great Lakes Employment and Training Association and Department of Labor Region V Leadership Conference, Dec. 4 in Chicago.

  • Associate Legislative Director Bob Fogel recently made the rounds on Capitol Hill meeting with both majority and minority staffs on the Senate Banking Committee to discuss transit issues; and minority staff on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee to talk about 2001 legislative issues. Fogel also spoke with Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) on transportation issues and attended an operations meeting for the Federal Highway Administration.
