New politics for a new century:
Reinventing citizen democracy

Many citizens and political observers recognize the crisis in confidence that is undermining the nation’s democracy. Primarily the political reform debate has centered on federal campaign finance reform. Yet, even the most ardent proponents recognize that campaign finance reform alone will not restore faith in America’s political institutions.

New Politics for a New Century, a three-day conference, is designed to begin the dialogue about a broad political reform movement that incorporates campaign finance reform, but also looks beyond that issue for ways to renew American democracy.

The conference, Oct. 14–16, is open to the public; community leaders and activists, elected officials, and non-governmental organizations are all invited to explore ways beyond campaign finance reform to reinvigorate the democratic process.

Conference speakers include: Rebecca Avila, executive director, Los Angeles Ethics Commission; E.J. Dionne, syndicated columnist; Nicole Gordon, executive director, New York City Campaign Finance Board; Jane Greunebaum, executive director, League of Women Voters of the U.S..

Also, Ellen Miller, executive director, Public Campaign; Harry Pozycki, chairman, Common Cause-New Jersey Mission Task Force; Josh Rosenkranz, executive director, Brennan Center for Justice; and Jim Wallis, national religious and civic leader and author.

Registration fee is $325 for National Civic League or Alliance for National Renewal members; $425 for nonmembers.

Register by mail (National Civic League, 1319 F Street N.W., Ste. 204, Washington, DC 20004), phone: 202/783-2961; fax: 202/347-2161, or at www.ncl.org/ncl/ncg99.htm.
