As part of its Counties Serve America campaign, NACo recently announced the Acts of Caring awards, a millennium awards program designed to bring widespread recognition to county volunteer programs and the services they provide to local communities. County government and local volunteers have a long-standing commitment to working together to improve communities. Officials have long been aware that volunteers are essential to meet community needs and challenges. By joining forces with county government, volunteers have a powerful impact on their communities that is both immediate and long lasting. As the millennium approaches, NACo will recognize and promote these volunteers and their counties to ensure the programs are modeled in the 21st century. For the awards program, NACo defines an act of caring as a service provided by a county volunteer or volunteer group that seeks to enhance or preserve the quality of life in the community. Up to 30 programs will be recognized as examples of outstanding Acts of Caring. Based on county size, as many as three programs will be recognized in each of 10 categories, including: arts and culture, employment and training, children and growth, environment, civic education and public information, health and human services, criminal justice, libraries, emergency management and parks and recreation. All county governments and affiliated volunteer groups with an active program meeting application criteria are eligible to participate in the Acts of Caring awards. Winners will be selected by an independent panel of judges and will be recognized at a ceremony during National County Government Week in April 2000. The application deadline for the Acts of Caring awards is Dec. 31. Submit your countys program today. For information on the application process, visit the NACo Web site at http://www.naco.org/programs/special/millenn/services/acts.cfm, or call the campaign services bureau at 202/387-8550.
