NACo Officers/County Officials
- Betty Lou Ward, NACo president, addressed the U.S. Conference of Mayors at the groups annual convention in New Orleans. Ward spoke on June 14, sharing the program with Vice President Al Gore, who recognized Ward, thanking her and NACo for city/county cooperation and the Joint Center for Sustainable Communities. Larry Naake, NACos executive director, also represented NACo at the conference.
- Winifred Lyday, director of information technology services, and Mike Shean, information technology project specialist, represented NACo at the 1999 GeoData Forum sponsored by the Federal Geographic Data Committee June 79. Also representing NACo were Randy Johnson, NACo immediate past president; Jay Parrish, Lancaster County, Pa.; Virginia Peterman, Howard County, Md.; Gary Caswell, Hennepin County, Minn.; Suzanne Hall, Wayne County, Mich.; Sue Cameron, Tillamook County, Ore.; Victoria Reinhardt, Ramsey County, Minn.; and Michael Blaska, Dane County, Wis.
NACo Staff
- Susan Parrish represented NACo at the Mississippi Association of Supervisors meeting June 1417. Parrish promoted the value of NACo and NACo membership.
- Neil Bomberg, associate legislative director, represented NACo at the U.S. Department of Labor Region X conference on the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) in Portland, Ore., June 1416, where he participated in a workshop on "One-Stop Systems: The County Perspective" and at the closing general session.
- Ed Rosado, legislative director, represented NACo at the Ohio Association of Counties meeting June 15 in Cleveland. Rosado gave the group a legislative update at a lunch session.
- On June 9, at the Colorado Counties, Inc. summer meeting, Jeff Arnold, NACo deputy legislative director, spoke to their Public Lands Committee on "How to Influence Congress Without Leaving Home." He also discussed with the delegates public land policy issues important to Colorado.
- Bomberg and Marilina Sanz, associate legislative director, hosted a June 9 meeting of 20 public sector, business, labor and community based organizations at NACo headquarters, to discuss a Welfare-to-Work proposal currently being considered by the Senate and House.
- Tom Sweet, director of public/private partnerships, and Donna Smith, director of the insurance and related services sector of the Financial Services Center, represented NACo in San Diego June 79 at the Public Risk Management Association Annual Conference. They discussed issues related to liability, workers compensation and other county insurance-related issues. Sweet also met with the Public Risk Database Committee, as a member representing counties.
- Jacqueline Byers, director of research, made a presentation to the PEW Foundation meeting at the Americans for the Arts Annual Conference in Atlanta, Ga. on June 5, outlining innovative ways that counties can support the arts.
- Naomi Friedman, senior project manager, represented NACo at a June 4 workshop at the Maryland Recyclers Coalition Annual Meeting, in Wye Mills, Md. Friedman spoke about environmental purchasing.
- Sweet and Steve Swendiman, managing director of the Financial Services Center, represented NACo in Columbus, Ohio on June 3 in a meeting with Nationwide Retirement Solutions to discuss a variety of issues relative to the FSC and retirement programs for county employees.
