Plenty of opportunities to get
out and have fun in St. Louis

Anyone who has seen "The Shining" and watched a deranged Jack Nicholson type 500 pages of "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy," knows that being couped up in a hotel can do terrible things to a person.

Before you drag out that typewriter in St. Louis and try your hand at fiction, why don’t you consider sampling some of the area’s other recreational activities.

Golf
There’s certainly no shortage of golf courses in the St. Louis metro area. A couple have been designed by pros.

Spencer T. Olin Community Golf Course
4701 College Ave., Alton, Ill.
Ever heard of Arnold Palmer? He designed this 18–hole, par 72 course, which has been rated the number one Public Golf Facility in St. Louis for five consecutive years.

Cottonwood Golf Club
Highways Y and 21 in DeSoto
This nine–hole course is a par 36, cut from the hardwood forest, and featuring Westwood Bermuda tees and fairways and bentgrass greens.
6 a.m. – 8 p.m.
Admission $10 – $13.50 (depending on season). $5 cart.

Forest Park Golf Course
5591 Grand Drive
This is an 18–hole course with rolling hills and scenic park views.

Gateway Golf Links
Bend Road and N. Highway
18–hole regulation golf course. Nine–hole par three. Driving range and full teaching facility.

Lakewood Golf Club
1015 Bowles Ave., Fenton, Mo.
Nine–hole Lakewood is a rolling par 34 designed with the high–handicapper or novice in mind.
6 a.m. – 8 p.m.
Admission $9.75 – $13.50 (depending on season). $5 cart.

Quail Creek Golf Club
6022 Wells Road
This 18–hole public facility was designed by Hale Irwin and is managed by Eagle Golf Services. It’s a challenging par 72 with four different tee placements.
6 a.m. – 8 p.m.
Admission $35 – $51 (depending on season). $10 cart.

Parks

Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site
7400 Grant Road
The park commemorates the life, military career and presidency of Ulysses S. Grant and his wife, Julia. The farm includes five historic structures: the main house, a stone building, a barn, a chicken house and the ice house. It’s open 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. The National Park Service has interpretive tours and advises visitors to plan to spend at least an hour.

Go–karts/Assorted goofiness

Grand Prix Karting
3500 Highway 94 North
If you have daydreams of edging past Jeff Gordon to find yourself in Daytona’s winner’s circle, you might want to sample what we’re told is the Midwest's largest go–cart/sprint–cart track. Go–karts for everyone ages five and up. Racing sprint karts are for ages 16 and up.

The Infield
On Manchester Road, west of Clarkson Road, Ellisville
The Infield bills itself as a "state–of–the–art family fun center." The menu includes go–karts, batting cages, miniature golf and an arcade.

Swing–A–Round Fun Town
Highway 141 at Gravois, Fenton, Mo.
A little something for everyone here: Go–karts, kiddie karts, bumper boats, three miniature golf courses, batting cages, 80 arcade games and food concessions.
