T
he controversial topic of Internet taxes will take center stage at NACo’s Annual Conference Monday, July 19 when invited speakersVirginia Gov. James Gilmore, Washington County (Ore.) Commissioner Delna Jones and Robert Pittman, president of American Online, tackle the subject during a morning general session.

Gilmore is chairman of the Advisory Commission on Electronic Commerce, which is charged with studying the issue of collecting sales taxes on items sold via the Internet, mail order or through other remote sales. Jones and Pittman are also members of the commission.

The three will discuss "The Impact of Electronic Commerce on States, Counties and Cities," in a session moderated by Charles Fluharty, director of the Rural Policy Research Institute at the University of Missouri.

At issue are the sales taxes from purchases made electronically over the Internet. Last year those sales amounted to $13 billion. Because of the explosive growth of the Internet, some estimate sales could top $500 billion in coming years.

The Advisory Commission on Electronic Commerce was set to hold its first meeting this week in Williamsburg, Va. In addition to Jones, others representing NACo at the meeting will include NACo Executive Director Larry Naake, Legislative Director Edwin Rosado and Associate Legislative Director Ralph Tabor.
