Smart Growth panel meets Sunday


Don’t miss the Special County Environmental Fair Sunday, July 18. The panel begins at 8:30 a.m.; repeating roundtable discussion: 9:40–11:50 a.m.

Our nation nation is experiencing an explosion of concern about current land-use and development patterns. This issue, as perhaps no other, has placed county officials on the hot seat, forcing them to choose between often competing interests. To help counties effectively meet this challenge, this session will discuss how to build partnerships between diverse interest groups, and gain support for "smart growth" policies and programs.

The workshop will begin with a 45-minute panel discussion featuring a diversity of perspectives on the issue. This will be followed by five repeating, roundtable discussions when attendees will meet in small groups with speakers to obtain an–depth look at the following five issues:

  • Smart Growth Policies, Ordinances and Tools
  • Political Tips for Implementing Smart Growth
  • Working with Developers
  • Land Conservation and Acquisition
  • Building a Community Process for Smart Growth
