NACo to unveil book on the association’s
history at the 1999 Annual Conference

In celebration of the approaching millennium, and of the men and women who have served the cause of county government through the National Association of Counties, NACo will present to conference delegates Serving America’s Counties: A History of the National Association of Counties.

The softcover book, with research compiled by former Executive Director Bernie Hillenbrand, will take readers from NACo’s earliest, bare–bones days in the Depression to a Pentagon briefing of NACo executives during the Cuban missile crisis, to an annual conference in Detroit during the 1967 riots following the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. to today’s robust, vital association.

"We’ve been urging counties to take a look at their history as a part of their celebrating the new millennium next year. We thought it only fair to explore our history in the same spirit," said Larry Naake, NACo executive director. .

"We hope that after they’ve read NACo’s history, today’s NACo members will come away with a feeling of pride in their association and a renewed respect for the leaders that struggled and succeeded in making county government the force that it is today."
