First Lady holds conference call with
county officials on Millennium Communities

Officials from Pinellas County, Fla., Thurston County, Wash. and the City/County of Philadelphia, Pa. joined elected officials from seven other jurisdictions in a conference call with First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton April 28 to discuss Millennium Communities.

The 10 communities are among the first to be designated official Millennium Communities by the White House. Rodham Clinton used the call to congratulate the communities for their initiative and to learn about their upcoming plans.

The county officials participating in the call were Barbara Sheen Todd, chair, Pinellas County Board of Commissioners; Judy Wilson, chair, Thurston County Board of Commissioners and Mayor Edward G. Rendell, Philadelphia, Pa.

The Millennium Communities Program, which was announced by the First Lady in January, is a national noncompetitive program designed to recognize communities that undertake projects and activities that are consistent with the national theme, "Honor the Past – Imagine the Future."

The program is a partnership of the White House Millennium Council, NACo, the U.S. Conference of Mayors, the National League of Cities, the National Association of Towns and Townships, and the Bureau of Indian Affairs, with support from BellSouth Corporation, a national corporate sponsor.

Designated Millennium Communities will be awarded use of the national millennium logo and motto to identify community projects and events as part of the national millennium observance. They will be able to register their projects and events on the Millennium Communities Web site www.milleniumcommunities.org, which was established to allow for ideas to be shared. Nearly 100 communities have applied for and will receive the official Millennium Community designation by the end of May.

To receive a Millennium Communities Handbook and application, fax your request to Tom Goodman at 202/393-2630 or e-mail your request to tgoodman@naco.org.
