Counties Serve America
PSA campaign launched to promote counties

NACo will announce at the Annual Conference in Portland, Ore., its latest initiative, Counties Serve America, which is a campaign dedicated to public education and awareness.

Formerly Community Countdown 2000, Counties Serve America is one of three projects that are part of NACo's Millennium Programs. The others are Counties Celebrate the Millennium and The New Century County.

"County government provides the foundation for community life," said NACo Executive Director Larry Naake. "To encourage citizens to become actively involved in local government, we feel it is important to highlight some of the valuable services provided at the county le-vel."

Through the financial support of Nationwide Insurance, NACo will produce a series of television and radio public service announcements (PSAs) that will highlight county governments and the services they provide, such as transportation, food safety, health care, disaster assistance and recycling.

According to Naake, the PSAs are "designed to reveal some of the diverse services that county governments provide to ensure public safety and enrich our quality of life."

The campaign includes eight TV and five radio PSAs as well as three print ads which will be completed later this summer. All PSAs and ads will be distributed through a national network service and also will be made available at no cost to county officials for local placement.

A workshop is planned for the Annual Conference to help county officials learn more about generating maximum exposure for their counties through PSA placement.
