First Vice President Vernon Gray addressed delegates at the Community
and Economic Development Conference on Sept. 14 in Miami.
On
Sept. 26, NACo President Randy Johnson and NACo Associate Legislative
Director Neil Bomberg met with Labor Secretary Alexis Herman to review
the Department of Labor's "Draft Interim Planning Guidance and Instructions
for Submission of Annual State Plans." Johnson underscored NACo's
three major concerns - data collection, meeting match requirements and local
delivery of welfare-to-work services - and asked Herman to revise the document
to address these issues.
On
Sept. 28-Oct. 2, Johnson attended the Montana Association of Counties
annual meeting in Great Falls, Mont., and spoke at the banquet Oct. 1.
On
Oct. 1-3, Michael Hightower, NACo immediate past president, attended
the Fall Policy Conference of the Association of County Commissioners of
Georgia, in Atlanta.

Project Manager for Solid Waste and Pollution Prevention Naomi Friedman
moderated a workshop on "Promoting Waste Prevention at the Local Government
Level," Sept. 22, at the National Recycling Coalition's Annual Congress
in Orlando, Fla. Also speaking at this workshop was Joe Keyser, Environmental
Specialist, Montgomery County, Md.
On
Sept. 23, Bomberg and NACo Associate Legislative Director Marilina
Sanz met with General Accounting Office staff who are planning to evaluate
state and local efforts to implement the welfare-to-work program. The meeting
focused on innovative programs at the local level and how best to assess
them.
Mike
Raab and Tina Preston of the Erie County (N.Y.) Environmental
Compliance Services presented Erie County's Wetlands and Watershed Stewardship
Project at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's River Corridor and
Restoration Forum Sept. 23 in Springfield, Va. More than 150 people from
around the county attended the forum.
On
Sept. 23, Winifred Lyday, NACo director of the department of information
technology, attended the Technology 2007 conference in Boston where she
gave a presentation titled "Taking Advantage of Networks" at the
Federal Laboratory Consortium State and Local Government Committee Workshop.
On
Sept. 25, Bomberg met with the Board of Directors of the Training
and Employment Council of the U.S. Conference of Mayors. Bomberg presented
NACo's position on current efforts by Congress to amend the Job Training
Partnership Act.
Kelly
Schulman, NACo research associate/aging represented NACo and served
as a resource person at the Brookdale National Conference on Respite Issues,
Sept. 26-28 in Arlington County, Va.
On
Sept. 29-Oct. 1 Lyday went to the 88th Annual Conference of the Montana
Association of Counties. On Sept. 30, Lyday was a panelist on a workshop
titled "GIS: A Vital Resource for Counties" moderated by Gallatin
County (Mont.) Commissioner Jane Jelinski. Lyday met with
the Montana county information technology committee. On Oct. 1, she gave
a short presentation at a meeting of the Montana Local Government GIS Coalition.
