Call for Sustainable Codes and Ordinances

The Joint Center for Sustainable Communities (JCSC) wants your codes, ordinances or formal agreements that reflect some aspect of sustainability. The center is in the process of developing a clearinghouse that will provide counties with copies of ordinances that relate to sustainable development. These formal documents are the mechanisms by which sustainable community strategies are often implemented. We want to share them with counties and cities across the country.

We are looking for ordinances that promote: efficiency and cost effectiveness; improve collaboration among local jurisdictions, regions and agencies; provide innovative environmental protection (particularly market-based approaches) or innovative community-based approaches to improving the health and welfare of children and families; implement community-based approaches to policing and public safety; and improve the overall quality of life for residents in the community.

Specifically, codes and ordinances that relate to the following areas would be considered: growth management, land use management, "right-to-farm," farm land protection, public participation, cluster development, impervious surface restrictions, sustainable building technology, transportation, drinking water protection, community-based children and family services, watershed protection and conservation, sustainable and industrial development.

(Please send copies on a 3.5 diskette using Microsoft Word or WordPerfect software [we will also accept hard copies] to JCSC/NACo, 440 First St., N.W., Washington, DC 20001. If you would like copies of the Routt County report, write to the JCSC at the same address or call David George at 202/942-4243.)
