Lowenstein announces withdrawal as 1st vp candidate

Timothy Lowenstein, Buffalo County, Neb. board chairman, has announced his withdrawal as a candidate for NACo first vice president. In a letter to County News, April 21, Lowenstein said he is withdrawing because "it is my belief that the best for NACo is for there to be two candidates for the position to choose from."

Lowenstein, with his highly visible red-jacketed campaign team, entered the race early this year, joining Howard County (Md.) Council Member Vernon Gray and Fairfax County (Va.) Supervisor Gerry Hyland in the race for NACo first vice president.

In presentations before delegates to NACo's Legislative Conference in March, Lowenstein stressed the importance of technology to the future of NACo and to America's counties. In his letter, he repeated this theme, urging NACo members to examine the two remaining candidates for their commitment to technology.

"Speaking for myself, I must encourage you to examine the two remaining candidates carefully. With a genuine personal interest in the future of NACo I would encourage you to look for a strong commitment to the continued utilization of technology. The examination of ways and means to not only do things more efficiently for all governmental agencies, is also essential to the viability of counties in America."
