Minnesota, North Dakota associations launch programs to help flood victims


For several weeks, Americans have watched residents in the upper Midwest battle rising flood waters. Among the more dramatic battles was that being waged by the residents in Grand Forks, N.D., who ultimately lost their battle with the Red River.

The immediate battle may be over, but the real work has just begun. If you want to help Red River and other flood victims, contact:

 

Counties Helping Counties

This brand-new assistance program is the brainchild of the Association of Minnesota Counties (AMC). Counties help other counties by providing goods, services and personnel to assist in cleanup and restoration of services. The North Dakota Association of Counties is putting together a similar grass-roots effort.

The American Red Cross

For those who live in or near North Dakota who want to volunteer, call 701/241-9073. To make a financial donation, call 800/HELP-NOW (435-7669).

 

The Salvation Army

To donate clothing for flood victims, contact the Salvation Army at 800/ SAL-ARMY or 725-2769. In addition to clothing, the Salvation Army also accepts financial donations that can be earmarked for the flood victims. People can also find out more about volunteering by calling the 800 number.
