EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE

NACo President Michael Hightower was the luncheon speaker at his own state association's Legislative Conference. The Association County Commissioners of Georgia meeting was held Feb. 12-13 in Atlanta.

At a Feb. 19 meeting hosted by the Industry Advisory Council in Tyson's Corner, Va., President-elect Randy Johnson took part in a panel discussion on intergovernmental purchasing issues.

 

NACo STAFF

Associate Legislative Director Bob Fogel has been busy footing his way around Washington, D.C. to meetings concerning the reauthorization of the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act (ISTEA). This included meetings with Gloria Jeff, associate administrator, Federal Highway Administration, and staff from the offices of Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.), Rep. James Barcia (D-Mich.), Sen. John Chafee (R-R.I.), and the House Surface Transportation Subcommittee.

Fogel also testified at a Federal Communications Commission hearing on cellular tower siting, and attended a Rebuild America meeting. Rebuild America is a national coalition to promote investment in infrastructure.

In College Station, Texas on Feb. 19, County Services Representative Kaye Braaten addressed delegates to the 39th Annual County Judges and Commissioners' Conference on the national perspective on the devolution of government.

Membership Coordinator Susan Parrish traveled to Albany, N.Y. Feb. 23-25 for the New York State Association of Counties Legislative Conference to promote NACo membership.

On Feb. 18 in Phoenix, Ariz., Steve Swendiman, managing director of NACo's Financial Services Center (FSC), met with Shawn Lyons, executive director of the Arizona Association of Counties, about FSC programs and services.

Swendiman gave the same presentation to board members of the County Supervisors Association of Arizona on Feb. 20 in Phoenix.

Several new employees came on board at NACo over the last few months. They are: Nick Keller, director of the Joint Center for Sustainable Communitites; Tony Hayes, research assistant for environmental programs; Cindy Kenny, senior research associate for employment and training programs; Brian Lewton, administrator of NACo's Local Area Network/information system; and Paula Abney, payroll/benefit specialist.
