EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE

President-elect Randy Johnson and Second Vice President Dick Cecil represented NACo at Public Technology, Inc.'s Urban Consortium in Philadelphia, Pa. Nov. 20-23.

Johnson was in Duluth, Minn. for the Association of Minnesota Counties conference Dec. 1­3. County Services Representative Kaye Braaten was also there to promote NACo membership and services.

On Dec. 7­10, President Michael Hightower was in San Antonio, Texas for the National League of Cities conference. Hightower also attended a holiday reception at the White House on Dec. 16.

First Vice President Betty Lou Ward attended the Hawaii State Association of Counties meeting in Kauai Dec. 11­13. Legislative Director Reggie Todd was also there to give a presentation on "The Evolution of Devolution." Associate Legislative Director Jeff Arnold and Meetings Associate Horacio Gavilan were there as well for a site visit for NACo's 1997 Western Interstate Region conference.

 

NACo STAFF/COUNTY OFFICIALS

At the South Carolina Job Training Partnership Act Conference in Myrtle Beach Dec. 8­10, Director of Employment and Training Gary Gortenburg addressed delegates on job training issues.

On Nov. 14, Associate Legislative Director Diane Shea was the luncheon speaker at the annual meeting of the Indiana Solid Waste District Association in Indianapolis. She addressed the group on solid waste flow control legislation and the growing monopolization of the solid waste industry.

Director of Information Technology Services Win Lyday was at the 1996 GIS in Illinois Conference Nov. 18 in Schaumberg, Ill. to talk on county geographic information systems (GIS) applications; at a meeting of the National Academy of Public Administration on Dec. 12 in Washington, D.C. to speak on geographic information resources; and at the Management and Technology Conference Dec. 10 in Washington, D.C. to discuss knowledge management.

Project Director Rick Keister was in Colorado Springs, Colo. Dec. 2­5 at the Colorado Counties, Inc. meeting promoting NACo's HOME Project.

Formerly a consultant to NACo's Employment and Training Project, Cynthia Kenny has been brought on board as a full-time senior research associate for the project.

Tony Hayes has been hired as a research assistant for NACo's Pollution Prevention and Solid Waste Management Project. Previously, Hayes served as recycling coordinator for the city of Martinsburg, W.Va.
