Executive Committee

President-elect Randy Johnson (in photo at right) and Director of Information Technology Services Win Lyday were in Chicago, Ill. to participate in the Federal Geographic Data Committee hearings on the National Spatial Data Infrastructure Strategy on Nov. 6. The committee's final report should be issued in December.

Johnson was also in New Orleans, La. for the Deferred Compensation Advisory Committee meeting Nov. 1­2, where much of the discussions centered around program oversight and improvement. Helping staff the meeting were Interim Enterprise Services Director Tom Sweet, NACo Services Liaison Lena Palmer and Financial Marketing Analyst Fred Zeldow.

At the National Civic League Conference on Governance in Washington, D.C. on Nov. 8­9, Johnson and Arlington County (Va.) Board Chair Al Eisenberg participated in a panel discussion on successful programs at the local level. Deputy Executive Director Ed Ferguson also took part in a panel discussion on public dissatisfaction with government.

The Virginia Association of Counties held its annual meeting in Hot Springs on Nov. 10­12. Attending on behalf of NACo were President Michael Hightower, Second Vice President Dick Cecil, Executive Director Larry Naake, County News Editor Beverly Schlotterbeck, Associate Legislative Director Bob Fogel and County Services Representative Kay Braaten.

Hightower then traveled to Incline Village, Nev. for the Nevada Association of Counties meeting Nov. 13­15.

 

NACo Staff/County Officials

In Wayne County (Dearborn), Mich., on Nov. 12, Director of Community Services Jerry McNeil (in photo at left) spoke before the Detroit/Wayne County Sustainable Development Roundtable on the Joint Center for Sustainable Communities activities. Wayne County Commissioner Edna Bell was also in attendance.

The group then met with General Motors Vice Chair Harry Pearce at GM headquarters to discuss the work of the roundtable and to facilitate the redevelopment of vacated and contaminated properties in Detroit, which GM is helping to undertake.

Earlier this month, Neil Bomberg, associate legislative director, and Gary Gortenburg, director of training and employment programs, met with Assistant Secretary of Labor Tim Barnicle to discuss upcoming Administration efforts to reform the nation's job training system, implementation of waivers for local job training programs, and NACo's upcoming Employment Policy and Human Services Conference.

In Washington, D.C., Department of Transportation Deputy Secretary Mort Downey met with Associate Legislative Director Bob Fogel on issues related to the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act (ISTEA) on Nov. 8.

On Nov. 14­15, Fogel was in Chicago, Ill. to staff a telecommunications seminar sponsored by NACo, the U.S. Conference of Mayors and the National League of Cities.

Research Associate Lou Witt took part on a panel that discussed indoor air quality networking at the local level at the National Environmental Health Association meeting in Washington, D.C. on Nov. 1.

At the Kansas Association of Counties meeting in Wichita Nov. 19, Witt participated in a roundtable discussion on radon. Membership Coordinator Susan Parrish (in photo at right) was also there to promote NACo membership.

On Nov. 21, Witt addressed delegates to the 6th Annual National Radon Conference in McLean, Va. on local coalition building for radon-related issues.

On Nov. 13­15, Executive Director Larry Naake was in Richland, Wash. for the Washington State Association of Counties annual meeting.
