President Michael Hightower and Executive Director Larry Naake were in Dixville, N.H. for the New Hampshire Association of Counties annual conference Oct. 1­4 to update delegates on NACo initiatives.

The process for getting a bill through the state legislature was the subject of a presentation given by Hightower at a forum sponsored by the Sickle Cell Disease Foundation of America on Oct. 5 in Little Rock, Ark.

NACo Staff/County Officials

At the 5th European Conference on Volunteer Action, on Oct. 4 in Rome, Italy, San Mateo County (Calif.) AIDS Program Volunteer Resources Coordinator Irene Wysocki conducted a workshop on the development of an HIV/AIDS volunteer services program at the local government level. Wysocki used the San Mateo County model to share information about service delivery, funding sources and volunteer management.

Members of the Western Interstate Region (WIR) Board of Directors, along with Associate Legislative Director Jeff Arnold, gathered in Quincy, Calif., Oct. 3­4, where they discussed their legislative agenda and changes proposed for the WIR bylaws.

Corporate Relations Director Tom Sweet was in Memphis, Tenn., Oct. 2­4 for the Tennessee County Services Association annual conference to update association members on NACo services and initiatives, including PEBSCO, the Financial Services Center, Community Countdown 2000 and the Rural Renaissance Task Force.

On Sept. 23, Associate Legislative Director Diane Shea briefed the leadership of the Association of Metropolitan Sewerage Agencies (AMSA) in Washington, D.C. on NACo's environmental goals and priorities. AMSA is the national organization representing wastewater treatment professionals in the nation's largest counties and cities.

Earlier this month, Deputy Executive Director Ed Ferguson made a presentation on the Community Countdown 2000 initiative at the Association of Indiana Counties annual meeting in Indianapolis.

NACo's management team held its annual retreat in Charlottesville, Va., Sept. 30­Oct. 1, where department managers assessed progress on NACo's three-year vision and set goals for the coming year.

At the Association County Commissioners of Georgia meeting in Atlanta, Ga., Sept. 24, Financial Services Center (FSC) Director Steve Swendiman made a presentation on FSC programs and services.
