Medicaid managed care handbook assists public health agencies

To foster collaboration between public health and managed care organizations serving Medicaid patients, the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) has published Medicaid Managed Care: A Handbook for Public Health Agencies.

The handbook suggests how to become involved in a state's Medicaid waiver process so that the public's health is addressed; provides case studies about how public health agencies have successfully participated in Medicaid managed care arrangements; and describes strategies for contract negotiations between public health agencies and managed care organizations.

Produced with support from Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), Bureau of Primary Health Care, the handbook is part of more comprehensive efforts by NACCHO and HRSA to promote partnerships between public health and managed care, to enhance the health status of the nation's vulnerable populations and the community at large. Single, free copies are available by calling NACCHO, 202/783-5550.

NACCHO serves the nation's 3,000 local health departments. It is affiliated with NACo and is dedicated to improving the health of people and communities by assuring an effective local public health system.
