Plenty of options in Harris County during the NACo ‘96 Annual Conference

The Harris County host committee has the difficult task of deciding which attractions should be made available as spouse and youth tours for attendees of the 1996 Annual Conference.

The attractions the committee chose will highlight only a small number of the many interesting and exciting things Harris County offers.

For real summer fun, visitors should not miss Six Flags Astroworld and nearby Waterworld. Astroworld is a premier theme park with state-of-the-art rides and entertainment for all ages. Waterworld will give you and your kids a chance to swim and beat the heat at this fabulous water park.

Be sure and make an effort to visit Clear Lake, which sits about 20 miles southeast of Houston. In addition to NASA’s Johnson Space Center, life in Clear Lake centers on the water. The area has the third largest concentration of pleasure boats in the nation with marina space for 7,000 boats.

Visitors will find beautiful waterfront resort hotels and terrific seafood restaurants. Great recreational opportunities, including fishing and sailing, are also available.

True history buffs can enjoy up to eight Houston spots that are recognized as National Register Historic Districts. The sites contain the homes and offices of the men and women who literally built this city from the ground up in many different ways.

Some of the districts offer annual home tours or regularly scheduled walking tours. The Old Sixth Ward is the city’s oldest intact neighborhood. Originally, the neighborhood was home to middle class immigrants, mostly German, and the area is still full of almost 300 Victorian and Greek Revival-style cottages. The area is defined by St. Joseph Catholic Church, which is a notable example of Victorian-era religious architecture.

The Houston Heights, which was founded in 1894, is home to many restored and luxurious Victorian mansions. Take a slow drive along Heights Boulevard and view one beautifully restored Victorian home after another.

Downtown Houston’s architecture style is accented by two magnificent churches. Christ Church Cathedral, built in 1893, is the oldest Episcopal church in the city and Annunciation Catholic Church, which was constructed in 1871, is the oldest church in Houston. A stroll through the beautiful campus of Rice University, near the museum district, is a great way to spend an afternoon.

Those who appreciate eclectic collections of art will certainly enjoy the Menil Collection.

The 15,000-piece collection ranges from Byzantine and tribal art to the 20th-century schools of Cubism, Minimalism and Pop to exceptional Surrealist works by Ernst and Magritte. Conference attendees are also encouraged to visit the recently completed Holocaust Museum. This is Houston’s offering to the remembrance of those victims of the World War II tragedy.

Specific information regarding location, times of operation and guided tours of these attractions will be available to attendees at the Harris County Hospitality Booth.
