By setting your computer to enter standby or hibernate mode during the day when not in use you can save up to $75 or more. According to tests done by Consumer Reports, letting your system sleep for 12 hours out of every 24 would save about 576 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions annually. Turning the lights off in unoccupied offices, according to ENERGY STAR, can equate to an energy savings between 20 and 50% for individual offices. The U.S. Department of Energy also points out the majority of energy that lights use is transformed into heat, so turning off lights can also save on air-conditioning usage.
