Desloge testifies at first Intergovernmental Affairs Task Force hearing

NACo President Bryan Des-loge, testified at the first hearing held June 24 by a task force on intergovernmental relations established by House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.). The task force, chaired by Rep. Rob Bishop (R-Utah), aims to examine the balancing of interests between federal, state, local and tribal governments. Read more

President’s commission on drug addiction and opioid crisis holds first meeting

On June 16, President Trump’s Commission on Combating Drug Addiction and the Opioid Crisis held its first public meeting. Among the topics covered were the availability of evidence-based addiction treatment options, the connection between mental health and substance abuse and, especially important to counties, the impact of Medicaid on the opioid crisis. EDA announces availability of grants for coal communities

The Assistance to Coal Communities initiative will award up to $30 million on a competitive basis to assist communities severely impacted by the declining use of coal. Eligible communities and regions must be able to demonstrate how changes in the nation’s coal economy have affected or will affect their local economy as it pertains to job losses and lay-offs in any coal-reliant commercial sector or sectors.
