About NACo's Healthy Counties Program
NACo’s Healthy Counties Program is designed to help counties find solutions to the challenges they face in their communities, including increasing access to care, expansion of rural health systems, and advancing programs and policies to prevent childhood obesity. Through training, education, and technical assistance opportunities, the Healthy Counties Program mobilizes county officials to take a leadership role in improving health in their community and provides them with the tools needed to deliver more effective and higher quality services while containing costs.

Access to Health Care
With support from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, NACo provides technical assistance to county officials to strengthen the health care safety net and expand access to care.
Rural Health Works
NACo awards Rural Health Works grants to counties with the support of the Federal Office of Rural Health Policy. Rural Health Works is a community engagement process that helps counties to evaluate their healthcare system and to generate county-specific data on the importance of the healthcare sector to the local economy. The ultimate goal is to strengthen rural economies by increasing use and expansion of health services.
Childhood Obesity Prevention
NACo provides technical assistance on childhood obesity prevention to counties with funding support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Leadership for Healthy Communities national program office. This includes facilitated community dialogues, direct technical assistance to counties with vulnerable populations, a searchable best practices database, and publications designed to increase local elected officials’ understanding of how to promote healthy lifestyles for children.
