GIS Policy and Legislation

As GIS and related technologies have gained widespread acceptance within organizations, so to has the need to establish standards that allow for the efficient and economical collection, storage, and utilization of geospatial information. Legislators are aware of the power of GIS technology and are now engaged in the process of examining how policy can shape coordination efforts between multiple levels of government and with the private sector.

At the County level, GIS practitioners produce, store, and update volumes of accurate data for their jurisdiction. This information is valuable to departments within the county, as well as neighboring counties, municipalities, and state and federal agencies for many different applications such as planning, taxation, transportation, health, and public safety. The value of this information outside of its intended business purpose necessitates policy development to address data sharing guidelines. Will data be sold? Will data be given away? Will a data sharing partnership be established that benefits both parties?

Below is a catalog of articles and documents that provide both education on current GIS legislation, as well as examples for legislators seeking advice when developing policy on GIS and related technology matters (i.e. GPS, Remote Sensing).
