Payments In Lieu of Taxes(PILT)

County PILT payments Search

Payments In Lieu of Taxes(PILT) are Federal payments to local government which have certain Federal lands within their boundaries because the Federal government does not pay local or state property taxes on land its owns. The program is administered by the Department of the Interior through the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). BLM's responsibility is to calculate the payments according to the formulas established by law and distribute the funds appropriated by Congress.

Select a State to view PILT payments for counties in that state.

This year, some counties will receive slightly reduced PILT payments to adjust for increased revenue received during the previous fiscal year under the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act. This Act provides payments to compensate certain counties for declining timber receipts. Changes in PILT payments can also occur based on the amount that Congress appropriates for the program in a given fiscal year.
