Maricopa County, AZ
Population: 2,122,101
Program Year: 2007
Abstract:
Between July 1, 2004 and July 1, 2005, Maricopa County experienced the highest population increase of any growing county in the United States. Consequently, development has changed the topography in profound ways. New construction has contributed to the obliteration of a significant portion of the natural drainage patterns. In order to perform floodplain delineations, knowledge of the original drainage system is useful and contributes to keeping residents out of harm’s way.
The Flood Control District of Maricopa County is one of the first agencies in the nation to have researched, acquired, digitized and made available on line historical aerial photography. Having this information available through the intranet and internet enables county employees to perform their jobs in a more efficient manner and at the same time provides a service to the community by having the information available to all county residents.
