Desktop Refresh Process
Maricopa County, AZ
Population: 2,122,101
Program Year: 2006
Abstract:
Maricopa County’s Desktop Refresh Program (DRP) is a centralized series of planning, funding, purchasing and salvaging processes designed for the county’s general fund departments to use in replacing their personal computers on a three-year cycle as warranties run out. "Desktop" refers to personal computers assigned to individual users, and "refresh" refers to the replacement of personal computers that have warranties about to expire with new equipment.
The program’s success is validated by 90% of the County’s 48 general fund departments participating in it. It has, in a three-year period, resulted in replacement of 6,470 personal computers. Cost to run the program is $109,000 annually, representing one full time staff member with part time assistance from two additional staff members. Comparing the cost to the savings as a result of the program shows an average of $207,000 saved each year in service contracts and $1.078 million saved in personal computers through volume purchases.
