Communications Interoperablity
Maricopa County, AZ
Population: 2,122,101
Program Year: 2005
Abstract:
In summer 2004, recognizing a need among local law enforcement agencies using disparate radio systems to talk to each other, Maricopa County Wireless Systems researched and implemented an inexpensive radio communications interoperability solution. More than a simple application of new technology, this innovative communications gateway required the cooperation of multiple public safety agencies to identify and dedicate common channels and to “sell” the idea to their stakeholders: cops on the street. The system is a more permanent solution to interoperability issues. It patches radio signals operating on different frequencies together into “talkgroups”, and the patching devices are installed in fixed, secure locations.
By spearheading this successful effort, Maricopa County Wireless Systems greatly enhanced the ability of law enforcement personnel to respond quickly and efficiently to multi-jurisdictional emergencies ranging from vehicular pursuits that cross city boundaries to local and regional events that threaten homeland security.
