The Use of Volunteers to Increase the Cognitive and Social Skills Levels of Preschoolers
York County, VA
Population: 42,422
Program Year: 2001
Abstract:
The York County Head Start program is operated by County government through the Department of Community Services' Division of Children's Services. The program relies on federal as well as County funding to sustain a program that is state licensed and nationally accredited through the National Association of Education of Young Children (NAEYC). The program serves 117 eligible preschoolers, ages 3 to 5 years, and seeks to increase children's readiness skills for Kindergarten and long term success in school. The program has conducted pre- and post tests on children in an attempt to measure growth or the possible impact of the program on children's cognitive and social skills. The program relies heavily on volunteers to work with children individually in skill development and enhancement. In addition to the use of parents and community volunteers, the Foster Grandparent program and the AmeriCorps VISTA program contribute significantly to the program in terms of the amount of volunteer hours and quality of service. The program currently has an allocation for 2 AmeriCorps VISTA volunteers and 6 Foster Grandparents.
